For something truly exceptional, heavier and wider, the Redwoods style ring is cast in 14K red gold and varies in width from 6 8mm. The hammered version of the Subtlety ring, called Love Rocks, is hammered from ring blanks cast by Cyr herself, producing thicker rings, with softer edges and no solder seams, according to the website. Love Rocks features mixed up marks that look like granite and Cyr claims the ring will look great even after heavy wear.

The Tooled with Love ring which features a handmade look from hammering, filing, sanding and chasing for a lovely mix of random tool marks. This substantial, masculine looking ring is available with or without a patina finish. Also, Cyr offers a Vine and Leaf ring, Midnight Vine ring, and Wish Upon a Star ring. For $5 plus shipping, Cyr will send you a ring sizer kit to ensure you get it right the first time.

Historically Inspired Mens RingsHighly respected Pennsylvania jewelry artist Jim Meyer takes inspiration from ancient history and his travels and time spent in Greece, Italy, India and Japan. I attempt to convey a sense of history and architecture in my pieces, reads the testimonial on his website, James Meyer Jewelry.

To that end, Meyer uses the ancient lost wax method of making jewelery. After the design process, Meyer hand fashions a true size wax model for his piece, then, makes a plaster mold around the wax model. The plaster mold and wax model are heated until the wax burns away. Then, melted metal is poured into the mold to create the final piece. When the molten metal is cooled and hardened, the plaster cast is destroyed and the metal piece must be scrupulously cleaned, abraded and polished. This is an extremely time consuming process. Because both model and mold are destroyed during the process, each heirloom quality jewelry piece is one of a kind.

Also, Meyer uses the direct metal method to hammer and hand shape his work. Other metals, wrapped and bezeled, as well as beautiful gemstones may be added to the final piece. Many featured gemstones are cut and polished old style as cabochons, as well as flat faceted. Meyer secures gemstones using labor intensive, time honored, bezel and gypsy settings where the the entire circumference of each stone is surrounded by metal as opposed to the modern, less skill required prong set method.

Timeless Ring Design Good Enough for Smithsonian CollectionMeyers beautiful hand worked pieces are divinely simple, classically elegant, and absolutely timeless in design. His skill and design are so highly regarded that some of Meyers pieces have earned their place in The Smithsonian Institutes permanent collection.

Although Meyer shows many rings on his site, he writes under the Wedding Bands section, I have no made up stock to sell. As with many of my one of a kind pieces, I consult with the customer about the style, metals and stones to be used. His gorgeous finished ring photos feature plenty to inspire your very own James Meyer ring.

James Meyer Protegs Offer Meyer style Fine JewelryUnfortunately, as this article was being published, Jim Meyer emailed and explained that he was going to be making a limited amount of jewelry for the foreseeable future in order to pursue other endeavors, such as printmaking and furniture making. So for now, consumers looking for an iconic Meyer piece may not be able to find one.

However, the good news is that Jims son, Caleb Meyer, follows in the style of his father and fashions a full line of one of a kind fine jewelry pieces, including handcrafted wedding rings and wedding ring sets, gemstone rings, and 18K gold mens signet rings ready for personal engravings.

Also, jewelry artist Ann McKay, who used to work with Meyer, offers fine jewelry in the Meyer style. For men, McKay offers a line of wedding bands and bridal sets. Both Anne McKay and Caleb Meyer accept custom orders.

Diamond Rings, Gold Rings for MenIf it is a man ring with diamonds that you desire, then, look no further than to David Friedlander, owner of Diamonds by Lauren. Specializing in colored and unusual diamonds and diamond jewelry, Friedlanders office is smack in the middle of New York Citys diamonds district just an elevator ride away from the worlds most prolific source for diamonds of every conceivable shape, color and size.

Purple diamond, you say? With two websites offered through Etsy, her BethCyrWeddings site features one of a kind, hand tooled, custom order rings and wedding bands for men and women.

Some of her most distinctive designs are her 14K yellow gold Tree Bark rings. Each unique piece features an outer surface textured and grooved like the bark of a tree. The 6mm mans ring may be ordered with or without a patina finish. For something truly exceptional, heavier and wider, the Redwoods style ring is cast in 14K red gold and varies in width from 6 8mm. This substantial, hefty man ring is 2mm thick and features a craggy and rough surface.

Looking for a little sparkle? The Tree Bark Love Knot ring has the look of natural tree bark and features a diamond inset into a wood knot in the bark like finish. Truly an exceptional, organic design. The ring may be ordered in one of several metal choices in a variety of finishes.

Simple and Understated Organic Rings for MenFor something elegantly simple and understated, Cyrs silky smooth Subtlety ring, featuring what Cyr describes as a hint of organic softness is available in 14K and 18K gold, sterling, and palladium white gold.

Sometimes, he can get his hands on your custom request within hours. Sometimes, it may take awhile before a cutter comes to him with the perfect stone. Etsy Interview with Silver River Jewelry
Etsy Interview with Silver River Jewelry

First off, tell me a little bit about yourself. Well I am 44 years old, married and have two children who are almost grown. We have 2 Australian Shepherds, 2 cats, a snake and a lizard. I love the outdoors, gardening and being on the water. I also love making jewelry and glass beads, thus Silver River Jewelry was born!

How and when did you start making jewelry and your other items?

I have always done lots of crafting, from crocheting to ceramics. I also sketch and draw and do the occasional cross stitch. My daughter, who was 13 at the time, had expressed an interest in a jewelry making kit for her birthday. After about 2 months she decided she really wasnt interested and put it away. I came across it one night and sat in bed watching tv and made 6 pairs of earrings and a necklace. I was totally hooked from that point on lol.

From there, I learned lapidary making stone cabs, metal smithing and most recently lampwork glass beads. This allows me to make 90% of the components that go into my jewelry for a truly handmade piece. And the metal etching is all original artwork drawn by me also. I started making so much of it I had to find an outlet for it all so Silver River Jewelry was born.

When and how did you originally find Etsy?

I started on Etsy in 2007, a friend of a friend from Canada no less told me about it and after several mentions by her I went and checked it out.

What is unique about Etsy and what about the website do you like the most in regards to your shop?

Etsy is unique in the fact that it is one of the first sites specifically created for the handmade market that doesnt involve auctions and mass selling of items other than handmade. I like the clean look and how the shop is made to focus on the items the seller has.

What inspires you the most in regards to your creations?

Just about anything can be an inspiration. Mostly though, colors, and nature. I do have a piece in my Silver River Jewelry shop that was inspired by a piece of art on a restaurant wall, so inspiration can really come from anywhere.

What is your favorite piece youve created and why?

Hmm thats a tough one, I really like most of what I make. I think right now its my Hand Etched Heart Pendant with Handmade Lampwork Bead. This particular piece uses several different handmade techniques metal smithing, etching, lampwork bead making as well as bead weaving.

What do you want to accomplish with your online shop?

I would like to one day be able to quit my day job and do this for a living. In the meantime, I am able to share my creations and continue to do make the things that I love to make.

Do you have any new creations in the works? If so, what can shoppers expect to see from you soon?

I will have new jewelry posted soon, that include some wire wrapping, some more jewelry with my original lampwork, and also some more ethced and beaded pendants.

Where can readers find out about more information regarding your jewelry and other creations and possible special offers including additional websites, blogs, facebook, etc?

Published by Rachel B.

Rachel B. is a college student from the Midwest with a passion for political and local issues. CreateBold Bracelets With Hardware Store Findings
Create 3 Bold Bracelets With Hardware Store Findings

I got excited at the thought of making bracelets out of stuff from a hardware store. I love hammers and saws and all those little metal things you find while exploring each aisle. When I was growing up, my dads home projects meant frequent supply runs. That was usually a guy thing, but sometimes he let me tag along. Ive been a nuts and bolts girl ever since, which made it easy and fun to create bracelets that say Im nuts over you. I shopped for bracelet parts at my usual hardware store. Its big enough to have a good selection but small enough so I dont get lost. I found what I needed in a single aisle: little drawers of nuts and washers on one side, wire on the other. I got excited and spent way too much on findings; but you dont have to. Even if you buy wire, 10 dollars should cover the cost of supplies for several bracelets. Once you get the hang of it, you can make one in about 30 minutes. Your tween can make them with a little help from mom or dad.

Wire cuttersWire, washers and nuts make these bracelets bold and distinctive. Theyre easy once you learn to make simple figure 8s. See Wire Jewelry Making: What Can You Do with a Figure 8? to learn the technique. Then lay out your pieces and connect them together.

1 Copper figure 8 bracelet

Make an super easy bracelet with just figure 8s made with 16 gauge copper wire from a hardware store. See Make a Wire Bracelet Even a Grandma Could Love for quick and easy instructions. The tutorial also has instructions for a shepherds hook clasp.

2 Chrome and copper bracelet

Use 7 chrome plated 2 CM washers slightly more than 3/4 inch. Make 15 figure 8s. For a different look flatten the wire first, then cut it into 1 and 1/2 inch pieces. Use 2 figure 8s to connect each washer. Finish one end with a Shepherds hook clasp and the other with a single figure 8 for fastening. 3 Blackened steel and chrome bracelet

Use 20 gauge blackened steel instead of copper. Add a large single washer for a bold focal point. Connect the Big washer with two 2 and 1/2 inch pieces of wire.

1 inch down on your wire, curve it into a wrapped loop around the big washer. See illustration

Add a nut then create another wrapped loop to hold it in place.

Complete your bracelet by connecting your washers and a clasp.

Now that youve got the basic technique, get creative with your hardware inspired bracelets. Add a few simple touches to make them personal.

Experiment with a mix of washers and wire in chrome, brass, copper and blackened steel. Add free form wire shapes.

Try adding a few wire hearts. See Handcrafted Jewelry: Simple Hearts Wire Earrings to learn how to create them. Ruled by the lucky planet, Jupiter, and reminiscent of the golden, generous sun, citrine healing stones are meant to instill happiness, joy, and goodness. They also have powerful purifying and revitalizing properties, making citrine crystal an ideal stone for anyone utilizing the beneficial energy of crystals.

The General Properties of Citrine CrystalCitrine is a variety of quartz crystal, which like amethyst, gains its color from small amounts of iron. Golden yellow to brownish amber, this stone is rare in its natural form. It can be found in Russia, Madagascar, Brazil, France, Britain, and the United States. Synthetic citrine is made from heat treated amethyst.

Citrine healing properties revolve around its sunlight qualities. Like the sun, it energizes and encourages. Wearing citrine jewelry is like having a positive force around, inspiring confidence and goodwill. It is also an overall cleansing stone, helping to purify not only the physical body, but the subtle bodies as well, bringing balance and connection with higher realms. Citrine crystal is also uniquely valuable in that it does not require routine crystal cleaning beyond an initial purification. Citrine takes negative energy, transmutes, dissipates it, and grounds it.

Citrine Healing Properties for the Mind and PsycheCitrine crystal has an intensely positive effect on the psyche and ones emotional outlook. This is the stone to use to help transform anger and negative emotions into positive ones. Through its cleansing energy, it releases darker feelings, tendencies, and thoughts, while at the same time bringing an awareness of divine energy through its ability to open the crown chakra. Wearing a citrine pendant or ring can allow one to go with the flow of life, and enjoy doing it.

When trying to unravel problems, particularly those that deal with family relationships, the presence of citrine can be helpful. This healing stone promotes concentration, and an inspired, creative thought process, able to use the connection with the higher mind to deal with issues. It also helps to dissipate feelings of fear, anger, and the weight of responsibility.

Citrine Healing Properties for the BodyFor the physical body, citrine is an ideal healing crystal to energize and revitalize. It instills a sense of vigor and motivation that can greatly help people facing lethargy, depression, and fatigue. It also helps to strengthen people who are physically sensitive to the environment.

Using a citrine crystal for its healing properties is known to cleanse the blood and increase circulation; this effect in itself will greatly improve overall well being. This stone is also believed to reverse degenerative diseases. Through stimulation, it can be used for constipation, for getting rid of cellulite, and for kidney and bladder infections. It also stimulates digestion. Using crystals for healing is a great way to enhance health, but always consult a health care practitioner in cases of serious illness.

Citrine Crystal as the Merchants StoneOne of the unique properties of citrine is its ability to increase wealth and success. If used selfishly, this crystal will never work; but, with an open, generous heart which citrine encourages it can teach how to energetically attract abundance. One way to use citrine in this way is to take a crystal, preferably a citrine geode, and place it in the wealth corner. The wealth corner is the farthest left corner at the back of a house, or of a room. A citrine geode will draw in abundant energy, bringing this positive force into the house and keeping it there.

Caring for Citrine Stones and JewelryCitrine stones can be stored in a velvet or silk pouch with other stones. A crystal should be cleansed when first received, but citrine naturally cleanses itself after that. Citrine stones and jewelry will fade in sunlight so be wary of excessive exposure. When wearing citrine jewelry for the healing properties, be sure that the crystal is in contact with the skin. A pendant hanging over the throat, or a ring are the best choices.

A citrine crystal, inherently positive and pure, is a perfect stone for someone just beginning to use crystals and gemstones for healing. Anime Style Electric Bikes
Anime Style Electric Bikes

Here a round up of interesting green tech news this week from EarthTechling, a green technology news and lifestyle website focused on consumers.

1. Solar Power at West Virginia College a Student Idea Thanks to the mutual interest in renewable energy of a physics and engineering student and a physics professor, the Christopher Hall of Science at West Virginia Wesleyan now features a 200 watt solar panel over its main entrance. The panel generates enough power to provide electricity to the main offices as well as to a refrigerator.

2. Love Plants? Then Wear One! Atlanta based art and design studio Wearable Planter has come up with a way for people to appreciate nature on the go by creating tiny planters that can be worn as jewelry or even affixed to bikes. The planters are created with 3D printing, which is extremely efficient in terms of waste. Plant itself not included.

3. Waste to Energy Plant Will Put Haiti Trash to Use To combat the sanitation issues in Haiti that have arisen in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, the Haitian government and Pittsburgh based International Electric Power IEP have created Project Phoenix, which aims to use the waste currently lying in the streets of Port au Prince as an energy source, which will both clean up the city and reduce the country dependency on foreign power sources. In addition, it estimated that the project will create about 1,800 new jobs, and provide power for over 75,000 homes.

4. Vertical Axis Turbine: New Take on Wind Potential An entry from Russia in the James Dyson Award competition features a new take on the vertical axis wind turbine, one whose design stems from careful consideration of aerodynamics to maximize the potential wind as a source of power, especially for small populations living far from a centralized grid. Each blade, for example, operates independently so that each can have the most efficient angle of attack, and in severe weather, the blades flatten out parallel to the air movement to reduce damage.

5. Znug Unveils its Anime Inspired Lowrider E Bike The zecOO, designed by Znug Design and manufactured by Autostaff Suehiro, was recently unveiled at the Tokyo Motorcycle Show. The low slung, 28 horsepower bike reaches a top speed of 70 mph, and its range is anywhere from 55 to 85 miles, is hefty at 540 pounds, and rather pricey at $70,000.

A Zou for the Lively Arts
A Zou for the Lively Arts

Were into the business of throwing a party.Kurt Mirtsching, Director of Everything, Shakespeares Pizza, Columbia, MO

Every self respecting college town has to have a good pizza restaurant I think its a law but how many are voted by Good Morning America as the Best College Hangout in the country. Thats just one surprising fact of this attractive leafy mid western city of 100,000 which swells every academic year by another 50,000 young adults.

North Village Arts DistrictI like low rise cities that have preserved their distinct architecture. Columbia reflects the Craftsmen and Art Deco styles in both their pre 1940s residential and commercial buildings. What is today the North Village Arts District was an area of warehouses, working class housing, the train station and assorted small businesses that made up a typical other side of the tracks neighborhood. The revival from boarding house to shabby chic began with its discovery in the late 1960s by that eras avant garde OK, the hippie movement of artists and musicians. North Village today sports galleries, affordable artist studio/lofts, cafes, a popular farmers market and the handsome train station thats now the bus terminal.

Anyone who has spent their money on expensive museum reproductions will be depressed when they see the high quality original art and jewelry at Perlow Stevens Gallery they could have purchased for less than they spent on copies. It confirms a reality I learned years ago that reproductions can never compete with originals. The attractive space highlights Missouri artists and rotates exhibits every three months. Just a block over is the eclectic collection of arts, crafts, clothing some one of a kind wearable art and artist studio space of Artlandish Gallery.

Orr Street Studios, in a renovated warehouse, is not atypical for working artists, except that each modest space is faced by stunning original three dimensional sliding doors the work of artist Chris Teeter. What is usually a simple working/retail space is transformed into a work of art on its own, worthy of anyones time. These are but a few of the galleries in Columbia. The citys Cultural Affairs Office publishes an excellent guide available both in the shops and online.

Every Monday, Eli Gays Cafe Berlin serves the homeless. Root Cellar, a sustainable foods market specializing in Missouri products will open soon as well as a farmers market on Sundays. The North Village exudes a strong sense of community, Everyones purpose is to create a better environment is their mantra according to Jennifer Perlow.

Roots n Blues n BBQ FestivalThe Blue Note Theater started its life as a typical vaudeville/movie venue during that golden age in 1927 and, just as predictably, entered a long period of decline after the 1940s. Rescued in the 1980s from destruction, it has emerged as a major force for musical events ever since. The Roots n Blues n BBQ Festival is its crowning achievement. Every year it brings dozens of blues and jazz groups, the Missouri bbq contest and thousands of music/food lovers to summer time Columbia to rock, eat and enjoy the streets of downtown Columbia. Given the strong ethic for community involvement, The Blue Notes impresario, Richard King, is deeply involved with Columbias Blues in the Schools program.

True/False Film FestivalMany residents of 21st century urban areas have gravitated to community based non profit theaters as an alternative to the bland Hollywood overpriced venues of the megaplex. Columbias Rag Tag Theater bests most that Ive experienced, starting with its old and impressive brick and glass commercial space. In the lobby is an attractive and spacious cafe/full bar operated by Uprise Bakery, which, by the way, corns its own brisket. Besides their attractive space and cafe, the theater is host to Americas leading documentary film festival, the True/False Film Festival. This international documentary film festival, now in its 9th year, is held over four days the first weekend in March. Thousands of people have the opportunity to view nearly 100 feature length and short films and join in discussions with their filmmakers. Viewing one of the shorts, Big Birding Day, made by the Festivals young co founder, David Wilson Paul Surtz is the second half of the team justified to me the glowing reviews and increasing national reputation of this individualistic event.

The University of MissouriMizzou, MU or just plain The Zou: the venerable University of Missouri has the double distinction of being one of the original government funded land grant colleges in the nation 1839 and having the worlds oldestSchool of Journalism. Founded in 1908 by newspaper man Walter Williams of Boonetown, the school set the standards for journalistic ethics in the age of yellow journalism which, unfortunately, still pervades our modern media. Touring the impressive facilities with Dr. Keith Politte, director of the Reynolds Journalism Institute, the state of the art multi media studios and cutting edge educational technology did help lessen my disappointment in the decline of print media. No matter the format, strict admission standards, rigorous curriculum and a strong ethical foundation are preparing students for the 22nd century. The entire multi thousand acre campus is officially a botanical garden overseen by a small army of professional and student gardeners under the enthusiastic direction of Pete Millier. Among the Universitys treasures is its Museum of Archaeology in a beautiful early 20th century structure. Unknown to me before my tour, the original grave marker of Thomas Jefferson is on Mizzous grounds. A gift from the family, it signifies our third Presidents pride in one of his greatest achievements, the Lewis and Clark expedition which started in Missouri. On a lighter note, a life size bronze sculpture of Beetle Bailey sitting at a picnic table graces the campus and is a terrific photo op! Mort Walker, creator of the comic strip, was an alumnus and based many of his first characters on his fraternity brothers.

Food, Food and More FoodColumbia certainly does not lack a wide assortment of eating establishments, nearly all within easy walking distance within downtown. Addisons bills itself as an American grill and in this heartland of barbeque, their signature sauce, FNG, on their baby back ribs, earns them their moniker. Yet Chef Jeremy Browns menu is a nice blend of Southwest, Asian and pasta fusion dishes. The Ahi Tuna Amuse Bouche appetizer is a tasty layering of sushi grade tuna on a tomato tortilla chip topped with pickled ginger, scallions, red pepper, sesame seeds, cilantro, lemon cream cheese and a honey soy reduction.

Shakespeares Pizza has been a Columbia institution since 1973 and is still owned by the Lewis family who has staunchly resisted large sums of money for their prime downtown real estate. Famous for its smorgasbord of toppings and extensive beer selections, its mission statement keeps both employees and customers happy as well as paying off handsomely both in profits and worker longevity Show up every day and do whats necessary and You know what to do, but what do you think?

If you have a craving for coffee donut, bacon, blackberry sage or lemon rosemary ice cream than Sparkys Homemade Ice Cream will more than satisfy. When Sparkys advertises small batch thats a literal statement. Each batch size is four gallons and given Columbias penchant for employee decision making, that results in many new and experimental flavors. For vegetarian and vegan devotees the Main Squeeze Natural Foods Cafe serves imaginative dishes and the freshest of in house made juices: organic carrot juice, celery/ ginger/apple/lemon juice combo and an intense berry smoothie to mention only three. The Chickun Salad, made from organic tofu, pecans, dried cherries, celery, red onion, parsley and spices, could almost fool a meat lover. I watched two young women enter the restaurant with fresh produce under their arms from their small farm for owner Leigh Lockhart to purchase, giving fresh meaning to the almost overused terms locally sourced and sustainable. Leigh collects donations for Columbias Food Bank and is involved with Central Latino which provides services to the Latino community and is directed by one of her best customers, Eduardo Crespi who just happened to be sitting in back of me we had a good talk.

Bleu Restaurant and Wine Bar is on the cutting edge of the cocktail revolution with their Rosemary Lemonade, Cucumber Basil Cooler and Port Cosmo, all creations of Rick Trippler. Chef Ben Parks describes his menu as contemporary American whatever works with fresh local ingredients pairing Duck Confit with apples, brie and caramelized onions on flatbread, Pork Shank and Roasted Portabella Bolognese, Basil Coconut Steamed Mussels I could have eaten several dozen and Grilled Salmon with lemon fennel risotto and saffron cream sauce. All are beautiful to gaze upon and delicious to consume.

Chef Mike Odettes Sycamore has been awarded the Slow Food Snail of Approval for adhering to farm to table principles. Meat is fabricated in house, a local Mennonite dairy supplies the eggs, milk and cream, the beef tenderloin is from a Missouri Legacy beef ranch and even the trout is from the Lake of the Ozarks. Chef Craig of The Wine Celler Bistro is a graduate of Kansas Citys Jackson County Community Colleges Culinary School. Americas publically funded community colleges are producing great chefs equal to any of the nations expensive for profit institutions. The Bistros walls are lined floor to ceiling with, what else, bottles of wine, all for sale and all intelligently labeled for the customer that doesnt speak wine. Whatever you desire to either take home or drink at the Bistro you will find it at Craig and Sarah Cyrs cozy restaurant. It doesnt hurt that Craig is a pastry chef at heart and his killer desserts pair beautifully with so many of their wine selections. A Gerard Bertrand sparkling vintage was just right with his decadent Double Layered Flourless Chocolate Torte. Craig and Sarah assume youre not a wine expert and offer help that make a customer relax and want to learn about and enjoy their selections.

Creating an environment for a visitor/customer to relax and enjoy is a fitting summary for the beautiful small city of Columbia, Missouri. As Mizzous Dr. Politte commented, Most interesting things happen when disciplines are blended, so lets blend Bleus Cucumber Basil Cooler and raise a toast to the town.
